Nature-based Solutions on existing infrastructures for resilient Water Management in the Mediterranean

1st press release: NATMed Prima Project Launches with Kick-off Meeting in Valladolid, Spain

May 3-4, 2023 – Valladolid, Spain

We are pleased to announce the official launch of the NATMed Prima Project, a three-year initiative funded by the European Union’s PRIMA Program. The project aims to improve water management in the Mediterranean using Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that integrate with existing water infrastructures. The goal is to enhance water quality, availability, and ecosystem services while addressing the unique water challenges of the Mediterranean region.

The project officially began with a meeting in Valladolid, Spain on May 3-4, 2023, where project partners gathered to define objectives and foster collaboration. NATMed brings together a consortium of 14 partners from academia, local authorities, and businesses across the Mediterranean.  NATMed will focus on demonstrating the impact of Full Water-Cycle NbS (FWC-NbS) across five key case studies in Spain, Greece, Italy, Turkey, and Algeria, with a specific focus on seasonal water cycle imbalances and sustainable management solutions.

NATMed also introduces the Mediterranean Community of Practice (MedCoP) to foster collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and local stakeholder engagement to co-design integrated water management solutions. By involving communities and stakeholders, the project aims to drive innovation, create green jobs, and enhance the sustainability of water resources.

The NATMed project will run until 2026, with pilot programs in various Mediterranean ecosystems, addressing the unique environmental and socio-economic challenges of the region. Key outcomes will include the development of a comprehensive decision-making tool to guide the replication and scalability of NbS in similar contexts.
