One of the 5 case studies of the NATMed project, Lake Chimaditida in Greece is getting support from nature itself! This beautiful wetland is part of the Natura 2000 network due to its rich biodiversity. In recent years, the overgrowth of reeds has threatened its wildlife, water quality, and natural balance.
To restore the ecosystem, a new Nature-based Solution has been introduced: controlled grazing by Greek buffaloes! Key characteristics of the NbS:
- A movable electric fence keeps the buffaloes in specific areas
- Each buffalo wears a GPS collar for real-time tracking
- Their grazing helps reduce reed overgrowth, improve habitat conditions, and support local Biodiversity
- This method is natural, low-impact, and climate-friendly
Lake Chimaditida is now becoming a model for wetland restoration, showing how traditional practices and modern technology can work together for resilient water management in the Mediterranean.
